Roots Rock Reggae

Dateline May, 14, 2006 - Rio de Janeiro.

The Easy All Star concert in the heart of the refurbished downtown nightspot, Lapa, now beaming and brimming with life, with gentrified sections in their centenary homes, was quite a happening. The beautiful young crowd was de rigueur, and the dub was on... Dancehall style, yet anchored in roots tradition, delay, reverb and phasers galore. This project, concoted by the Easy Star label, home to the great diaspora of Jamaican artists making up the New York scene, was quite bold. To turn Pink Floyd's conceptual Dark Side of the Moon into the Dub Side of the Moon. Tamar-Kali displayed an exquisite soprano on The Great Gig in the Sky behind a booming Ras-I-Ray playing a 5-string Fender P that shook the bass foundation to many points in the Richter Scale with stomping yet fluid lines. Some fans went to check out an offering or two of their new work, Radiodread, the dub cover of Radiohead's seminal album, OK Computer. They did not leave disappointed. The cover of Climbing Up the Walls was rooted in a slow-tempo bit that jarred the senses. The album will be out in the second semester with Sugar Minott on Exit Song and Toots and the Maytals, and many other luminaries taking part in the project. It was a best-kept secret in a cozy Fall night, and I urge the American contingent to check out the dates... They will be in New York again on June 8th. and it is worth checking it out. he Dollarman was the "toastah" and was positively right on free-styling on Time and some other hits....

Meanwhile a source at the concert who was part of a closed rehearsal section of Mutantes in Sao Paulo said the band is more than ready for their reunion at London's Barbican in a few days. The band will then embark on a US tour that no one can miss. They are playing with vintage equipment from way back in the day, and the technical crew was in tears after the rehearsal. Zelia Duncan will be the lead singer substituting legendary Rita Lee. The band's crew will be almost 40-strong with lighting people and the works. Mutantes' fans all around the world will be in for a surprise, listening to the sound that influenced from Nirvana to Radiohead.....
